7/11-15 IAAF World Youth Championships, Ostrava, Czech Republic
On Day Five, the final day of the IAAF World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic, Chanelle Price finished 6th in the finals of the 800 meters, running 2:06.55. She apparently fared better than the top seed, Winny Cherbet of Kenya, who was DQed. In the next to last event, the Sprint Medley (100-200-300-400), the U.S. won with Ryann Krais posting a split of 37.5 on the 300 leg.

Summary of the 800m Finals by Jim Spier, NSSF
This was to be a true test for Chanelle Price. She had the best time, by over two seconds, of anyone in the field. But there were a few dangerous runners in the group, including last year's World Junior medallist Winny Chebet of Kenya. Chanelle used her formula for success - take the lead early and hold it. She set a fast pace, leading the pack at 200m (28.33), 400m (58.60). At 500 meters, all the runners were with Price save one. Price led at 600m (1:30.47), dropping no one.
With 100m to go, Winny Chebet, just behind Price, tried to push her way between Chanelle and Olha Bibik of Romania, who was just to the right of Price and in second. She did force Chanelle to lose her concentration and threw her off pace slightly. At that moment, the field passed Price on the outside and Chanelle faded to next to last. I'm not sure if the "bump" made a difference, ultimately, but it certainly distracted Chanelle precisely at the wrong moment. Chebet was ultimately disqualified. The winner was Elena Mirela Lavric of Romania (2:04.29), with Alison Leonard (Great Britain, 2:05.36) second and Juana Ivis Mendez of Cuba third (2:05.42). Chanelle ran 2:06.55 for fifth.

Summary of Sprint Medley (100-200-300-400) by Jim Spier, NSSF
Chalonda Goodman got the US to the lead with a very fast 11.3 (hard to get these, obviously. The Jamaicans with Jura Levy, moved into the least, passing Ashton Purvis (24.8). Ryann Krais could not quite make up the distance on Simone Tracey of Jamaica, but held off a charge around the turn by Australia's Olivia Tauro, and was gaining Tracey at the handoff, Krais running 37.5. Erica Alexander got the baton and chased Latoya Mc Dermott of Jamaica for 350 meters, then passing her and running a great 52.1. The US got the gold in a World Youth leading 2:05.74. Jamaica was second in 2:06.77 and Canada overtaking Australia down the homestretch to get third in 2:09.08.
On Day Four of the IAAF World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic, Chanelle Price comfortably advanced to the final of the 800 with a 2nd in her heat and the 2nd best time of the day, 2:04.34. The final is Sunday at 11:20 our time.
Summary of the 800m Semi-Finals by Jim Spier, NSSF
Heat 1 - Chanelle Price led a parade of three through 700 meters: Winny Chebet of Kenya and Olha Bibik of the Ukraine. Price's splits were 60.01 and 1:31.97. Chebet passed Price with about 60 meters remaining and Price did not respond, knowing she had one of two auto qualifiers assured. Chebet ran 2:04.10 to Price's 2:04.34.

On Day Three, Ryann Krais earned a bronze medal in the 400 hurdles, running 57.50, which is .3 off her PR of 57.20. The USA's Dalilah Muhammad won the gold in 57.25, with Romania's Andreea Ionescu taking the silver in 57.33.

A really terrific race. In the early going it was Andreea Ionescu of Romania leading with Ryann Krais not far behind. Dalilah Muhammad was third or fourth through all of this. Ionescu was leading after the ninth hurdle with Krais now charging and gaining on her, and Muhammad moving into third. As they approached the last hurdle, both Ionescu and Krais hurdled it tentatively and Muhammad, who hurdled it beautifully, took advantage and glided past both. And that's the way it stayed through the finish with Muhammad winning in 57.25, Ionescu getting a PB in second at 57.33, and Krais third at 57.50.
45 minutes after Krais' bronze, PA other star on the track in the Czech Republic, Chanelle Price, cruised to a 2:07.82 and win in the 3rd of seven heats in the trials of the 800. The Semis are tomorrow.

800m Trials, Heat 3: An almost solo race for Chanelle Price, leading big at every split (27.99, 59.26, 1:32.90) and running an easy 2:07.82. Eleni Lefkopoulou of Greece was second at 2:11.06.
On Day Two rising Methacton senior Ryann Krais advanced to the finals of the 400 Hurdles with the 2nd fastest qualifying time at 58.67. Romania's Ionescu Andreea posted a 57.88 in the 1st heat. Krais ran from lane 7 in heat 3. Krais' final will be Friday July 13 at 11am Philly time, followed 45 minutes later by Price's first race in the 800 trials. Price will also have Semis on Saturday and Finals on Sunday. The USATF and AAU Region meets are also scheduled for this week.

Girls 400m Hurdles Round 1
Heat 1 The favorite was Shana-Gaye Tracey of Jamaica. She led through the eighth hurdle with not especially good form. She hit the ninth hurdle and Andreea Ionescu of Romania, gaining steadily on Tracey over the last two hurdles, took advantage of that to win "going away". Ionescu got a personal best in the process, running 57.88. Tracey qualified automatically in second at 59.38.
Heat 2 Dalilah Muhammad (Cardozo, Queens, NY) was relegated to lane 8 with the random draw. Not knowing how the competition was doing, she was in third our fourth through six hurdles. Seeing the competition now in the inside of her, she began to gain momentum. Just prior to the last hurdle, she had gotten herself into second behind Marli Spies of South Africa. Spies clobbered the last hurdle and went down, and Muhammad sprinted to a comfortable victory at 59.80. Second, well back but qualifying for the final, was Valeriya Znamenskaya of Russia at 61.12.
Heat 3 Ryann Krais (Methacton, Fairless Hills, PA), in lane 7, ran tentatively but never lost contact with the early leaders in the middle of the track. By hurdle eight she was in the lead and won handily, never hitting a hurdle the entire race. Her time was 58.67 and, finishing second with a PB of 59.80, was Mila Andric of Serbia.

Week's Preview
Junior stars Ryann Krais of Methacton and Chanelle Price of Easton are in the Czech Republic at the IAAF World Youth Championships. Krais debuts in her event, the 400 hurdles in the trials on Thursday July 12. She will run at 5am Philadelphia time (11am their time). Krais' final will be Friday July 13 at 11am Philly time, followed 45 minutes later by Price's first race in the 800 trials. Price will also have Semis on Saturday and Finals on Sunday. The USATF and AAU Region meets are also scheduled for this week.
