While the future of high school and college track and field was on display this weekend at the Tennessee Relays powered by Sea Ray in Knoxville, so was the past.
Amid a number of runs, throws and jumps by the athletes – including by a number of Chattanoogans – former Tennessee coach Stan Huntsman and his 1974 NCAA national outdoor champion team were recognized.
About 25 former team members were on hand Saturday afternoon at the University of Tennessee’s Tom Black Track for a reunion and to take part in the dedication of a plaque in coach Huntsman’s honor during ceremonies led by UT athletic director Dave Hart.
The 1974 team was the first men’s track team at Tennessee to win an outdoor title. Among the team members was Bill Anderson, a standout miler from Baylor School.
Coach Huntsman began serving as head track coach at Tennessee in 1971 after coming from Ohio University and later served as coach of Texas.
